About this role

Product Engineer Frontend (m/f/d)

Mid to Senior · Full-time · Hybrid/Remote

About the role

muffintech is at the forefront of AI-driven solutions for the insurance industry, empowering companies to seamlessly integrate cutting-edge technologies into their operations. We focus on vertical scalability – automating a broad range of insurance processes through a unified, AI-first platform rather than just tackling a single task.

We are hiring a Product Engineer to own the frontend of our product. This is a high-trust, high-ownership role: you will be the sole engineer on the frontend, responsible for building, shipping, and maintaining our web applications end to end. This is a product-minded engineering role — you will work hand-in-hand with product and design, who provide requirements and designs, and you will make the technical decisions yourself. Tech leadership is available to support you on major architectural calls, but day to day you will operate independently.

As the sole engineer on the frontend, you will need to be comfortable working autonomously and making effective use of modern AI-assisted tooling in your day-to-day work. The workload is well suited to one engineer working this way, with the emphasis on sound judgement, ownership, and consistent delivery.

What you’ll do

  • Own the full frontend lifecycle across our applications — from turning product requirements and designs into shipped, maintainable features to keeping the codebase healthy over time.
  • Own the technical decisions — choosing patterns, structuring components, and setting frontend conventions, with the CTO available as a sounding board on major choices.
  • Work closely with product and design — clarifying requirements early, raising edge cases, and keeping stakeholders informed of progress along the way.
  • Translate designs into a polished, faithful product, with care for interaction detail, spacing, and the overall feel of the interface.
  • Build and consume APIs over REST and WebSocket, handling real-time data and connection state cleanly.
  • Maintain and evolve a monorepo with two applications and multiple shared code packages, keeping shared code well-factored and reusable.
  • Maintain a high standard of quality across type safety, testing, accessibility, and performance.

Our tech stack

  • Monorepo - two applications plus multiple shared code packages.
  • React with Vite for the application layer.
  • TypeScript throughout.
  • CSS Modules for styling.
  • REST and WebSocket for network communication.

What we’re looking for

Essential

  • Strong, demonstrable experience building production React applications with TypeScript.
  • Comfort with a Vite-based toolchain and a monorepo with shared packages.
  • Solid CSS fundamentals; experience with CSS Modules or similar scoped-styling approaches.
  • Experience integrating with REST and WebSocket APIs, including real-time and connection-state handling.
  • A track record of working independently, taking requirements and designs through to completion with limited day-to-day oversight.
  • Sound technical judgment: you can weigh trade-offs, set conventions, and know when a decision is big enough to loop in the CTO.
  • Proactive, clear communication with product and design.
  • A strong eye for design detail, with the ability to translate designs faithfully, including interactions, spacing, and the various UI states.
  • Fluency with modern AI-assisted development tooling as part of your everyday workflow.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with frontend build/CI setups, testing strategy, and performance tuning.
  • Comfort working directly in design tools (e.g. Figma) to inspect specs and spot gaps early.

Who this role suits

This role suits someone who enjoys autonomy and ownership and is comfortable setting technical direction independently. As there is no senior engineer on the team to define the architecture or provide detailed implementation guidance, it is best suited to candidates who are confident making those decisions themselves.

How we work

  • Arrangement: Hybrid, or fully remote both possible
